How Smart Owl Began:
We officially launched Smart Owl Coffee in September 2020. However, The idea started with a conversation in 2010 between brothers Justin and Sean Valenti. At the time, Justin was studying for his doctorate in optometry and Sean was practicing in a private clinic, having already received his doctorate in chiropractic.
The brothers spent a lot of time reading articles about supplements and preventative wellness, having been raised in a household where these were common topics. Justin commented to Sean about how demanding school was and how endlessly refilling the coffee pot was not doing the trick. Sean and Robin not only remembered having the same exhaustion when they were in school, but that lack of energy and clarity was a very common complaint from their patients.
Justin mentioned an article he had discovered about how caffeine and L-theanine, a green tea extract, had a pronounced synergistic effect that improved focus, mood, and mental clarity. They all began implementing this combo into their daily routine.
Years later, Justin had the same conversation with his wife, Faith. At that time Faith and Justin had a newborn, a 2-year-old, and an 8-year-old. Needless to say, stress was abundant and sleep was a luxury. After flooding the bathtub several times, forgetting appointments, and feeling as though she was in an overall funk, Justin suggested she try adding L-theanine to her coffee. In her desperation, Faith gratefully accepted his homemade Theanine-infused coffee. After drinking it for several weeks, Faith could feel a difference and could not go back to drinking regular coffee, which made her jittery and anxiety-ridden. Our Formulations
While brain health is crucial, we were looking for ways to support other systems in our bodies as well, to really maximize the opportunity that a daily cup of boosted coffee afforded. We sat down in 2017 and started formulating different supplement blends. In addition to infusing with L-theanine, we created formulations to support our immune system, mood, performance, and digestive health. We searched far and wide to find providers for high quality ingredients, and ethically-sourced, USDA organic coffee.
It is of utmost importance for us to assure that the products we provide are of excellent quality and are as safe as possible for our consumers, the farmers, and the environment. This is why we are so selective about our ingredient sourcing, accreditations, and third party verifications to ensure sustainability, consistency, and exceptional products.
